Everything bagel seasoning is one of those pantry staples that makes very little sense for me to keep buying in tiny spice jars. It takes about a minute to mix at home, uses just six simple ingredients, and one batch gives me enough to refill a typical store-bought seasoning shaker several times.
And in our house, one batch lasts for months.
This homemade everything bagel seasoning has all the familiar texture and flavor you expect: white and black sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried onion, dried garlic, and salt. I make a larger batch, store it in a jar in the pantry, and it’s ready whenever we need it.

Why Make Everything Bagel Seasoning at Home?
The biggest reason for me is convenience. If I’m already keeping these individual ingredients in my pantry, there’s no reason to continually buy another little seasoning shaker.
Making it yourself also lets you control exactly what’s in the blend. There are no mystery ingredients, and you can easily adjust the salt later if your family prefers a little more or less.
Plus, it takes almost no time. Measure everything into a jar, mix it together, and you’re done.
What’s in Everything Bagel Seasoning?
You’ll need just six ingredients:
- White sesame seeds
- Black sesame seeds
- Poppy seeds
- Dried minced onion
- Dried minced garlic
- Fine salt
I like using both black and white sesame seeds. They don’t just give the seasoning that classic look—the contrast makes this one particularly pretty layered in a clear glass jar before it’s mixed.

Why I Use Fine Salt
You’ll see everything bagel seasoning recipes made with everything from flaky sea salt to coarse kosher salt.
For this batch, I use fine salt and a smaller amount of it.
The finer salt distributes throughout the mixture instead of leaving you with occasional large pieces of salt, and because fine salt is more compact by volume than a coarse or flaky salt, you don’t need nearly as much.
If you substitute a coarse or flaky salt, keep in mind that you may need to adjust the amount to taste.

An Easy Way to Fill Spice Jars Without the Mess
If you make homemade seasoning blends regularly, a canning or jar funnel is one of those inexpensive kitchen tools that’s absolutely worth keeping around.
I use mine to get seasonings into jars without leaving seeds and spices all over the counter—especially with a blend like this one, where poppy and sesame seeds seem determined to go everywhere.
Here’s the canning funnel I use, along with the glass spice jars I store my blends in.

What Can You Put Everything Bagel Seasoning On?
Don’t let the name limit you to bagels. This is one of those jars that earns its pantry space because you can use it all over the kitchen.
Try it on:
- Bagels with cream cheese
- Eggs
- Avocado toast
- Cottage cheese
- Roasted potatoes
- Roasted vegetables
- Chicken
- Salmon
- Homemade bread or rolls
- Popcorn
- Hummus and dips
- Salads
I especially like keeping blends like this ready to go because they’re an easy way to add flavor and texture without pulling six separate ingredients out of the pantry every time.

Do I Need to Toast the Sesame Seeds?
No. I keep this recipe simple and use the seeds as-is.
That’s especially useful if you plan to use the seasoning on something that’s going into the oven, where the seeds will have another opportunity to toast.
If you’re only using the blend as a finishing seasoning and prefer a deeper toasted flavor, you can toast the sesame seeds first. Just make sure they’re completely cool before putting the seasoning into your jar.

A Few Things I Use
- Canning funnel – keeps seeds and dry mixes off the counter when filling jars.
- Glass spice jars – airtight storage for homemade seasoning blends.
- Measuring cups – for the ¼-cup measures of seeds and onion.
- Measuring spoons – for measuring the garlic and salt.
- Redmond Real Salt, fine – the fine salt I keep in my pantry.
